Fixer

what image format are you saving it as?

Bryan304304

Fixer

yeah, that won't work,  I haven't been using the editor but,
I think you need   .bmp  possibly .png  .psd

If you have the help file the correct format is discussed there.

Back in the old days we used .tga and we liked it...LOL

Bryan304304

i tried all of therm they dont work :'(

Fixer

We are talking about the displacement map?

The images need to be 24 bit images and I think .bmp  should work

Bryan304304

do u know how to turn ur file in to a bmp file or no the image is 24

Oper ur ps file and go to "save-as" then you can choose between file formats. When you select .bmp and click ok a window will appear where u can select the bits.

But i dont understand you problem.. u open a hightmap in DE and then its blank?

Bryan304304

Oh.. ok.. i usually just import the .psd file.. worked 4 me all the time..

I have something like this happen to me before because of folde security settings. If you try to save a file to a folder that windows doesn't think you should use because of user permissions, like 'C:\Program files', it kindly places them in a shadow folder in your user space then in Windows Explorer it makes it look like the file is in the folder where you think you've saved it. But when you open up a program and go look for it the file has disappeared.

It will be in a folder somehwhere in your users private space - C:\Windows\Users\xxMyUserNamexx\..

To avoid this try saving the heightmap to the desktop or the My Documents folder, you always have access to that. Are you running DE as an administrator?

Fixer

Laurie, what file types are supported for import of disp maps in DEW?

mcm2boys

DEW supports a whole range of formats, they get loaded into bitmap internally and from there they are translated into textures. This process needs to be improved since some formats will simply produce garbage, things like 16bits per channel formats get sueezed back down to 8bits per channel since bmp doesn't support 16bit per channel natively so this causes unexpected loss of data. Thats why using bmp is more reliable, but psd should work also so long as you use the right format in photoshop ie not indexed or 16bit per channel etc

Bryan304304

that is the exact problem i am having but i been sitting here for about 3 days now trying i look in all my files it no to be found so idk i just gonna give up

mcm2boys

Did you try saving the heightmap to your desktop?

Are you running DE as administrator?

JamieT

In Photoshop, in the top menu, click... Image > Mode > 8 bits/Channel.

Save as a new file.  Then try it in Digital Earthworks.

So just so that i can be sure that i understand the problem, when you save a BMP file to the desktop you can see it in file explorer, and you can see the file sitting on your desktop but when you go look for it with DE it doesn't get listed?

When you're in DE looking for the file try typing *.* into the space where the file name normally goes and press enter - does that show your file in the list of files?

Bryan304304

i did what u said and it stills dont show and i type it in and it say no file found

Bryan304304

well when i turn it i to a bmp file it wont let me turn it in to a 8 and when i type the file it says file not supported
