is it just me or did the windows xp service pack 2 do wonders for the performance of mcm2 on your computer too?

Bunny

I really, don't know, sp2 makes my computer crash for some reason, it says it has a missing file and can't load windows.

Yeah, I was told not to install it.  They have had major problems with it.

tff_fourone

I only do the security updates. everything else screws stuff up. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

XP SP2 is a HUGE security update.  Unfortinately I haven't had any time to test it on our computers at work yet so we have not rolled it out yet.

It has worked on more people's computers than the one's it has messed up on, guess we need to wait for a more reliable release.

I've done my computers.  No problems so far.  I have not allowed Auto-Update to run.

SP2's main focus on security updates is outlook and IE... and since I don't care about those I don't care about SP2....

Then of course I have other reasons to never install and windows updates. But anyone with a reasonable mind doesn't spend hours on downloading crap to the computer that can get programs and tools to run funky/bad or not at all.

SP2 is just a lame excuse to fix lots of holes in the web tools mentioned above just because smart people slowly leave them to rust in a corner.

^>***IMHO***<^

I know that there is other things it does but I really don't care. If I will have to pay a price for that then I'll suck that up but I haven't needed it yet so I'll just learn the hard way then I gues. IF I now will have to "learn" at all that is.

Increased MCM 2 performance ey?, Im getting SP2  ;)
Shameless promotion :)

Basically with SP2 out now I won't help anyone anymore with adware/spyware unless they are moving to XP SP2.  I have wasted too much of my life helping others get their computer back just to have them get right back in the same situtation.  For me a minimum requirement is to have XP SP2.

OR to not use IE as most of us don't anymore :D ^_^

hmm I really should stop my anti IE plugging while I'm ahead... :P soon to many will be anoyed by me. It is just true tough. :-*

And if you do continue to use IE, ad-aware 6 and spybot search and destroy are a must.

I use IE and I do not use adaware or any spy tools on my computer.  I just do not have those kinds of problems.  I also don't use Anti-virus (although I do scan a couple of times a year to make sure that I'm clean).

Why would I ever want to use anything but IE.  Every alternative to IE that I've tried causes me more problems than IE does.  I like my web pages to work with full functionality.

I refuse to waste my computer resources on the possibility that I might be bitten by some malicious software.  I choose to just be more selective on whom I let use my computer and what is done on it.

I played with Firefox and could see no benefit to using it over IE.  Let's hear what benefits I would have if I used Firefox.

First of all, Firefox blocks every pop-up.  IT no longer gives you spyware or adware on your computer like IE does.  They release so many patches for ie because the have quite a few security holes.
If you want to start nit-picking, I believe that Firefox also loads faster than ie, but then again that depends on the computer you have.

You say you don't ever scan for adware or spyware Bruce?  Here are links to those programs and they are completely free.  All of that adware and spyware you might have on your computer could seriously chug down the performance of things, and I'm no genius with this stuff.

Ad-Aware

Spybot Search and destroy

I hope that helps you out, I recommend trying those programs and seeing how well your performance is afterwards.

I use the Google Toolbar in IE and it blocks all the popups that I ever get.  I do not get adware or spyware on my computer.  They release so many patches for windows because of the incredible amount of functionality that it contains and the fact the people like to exploit it.  Internet Explorer is really a very small program that does not have very much functionality.

My tests between Firefox and IE on my PC did not show a speed increase while using Firefox, unless it was a page that Firefox couldn't fully render because of missing functionality.  IExplore.exe is only 89k.  It is a wrapper that uses the API's built into Windows to present what you see as a browser, when the reality is that stuff is part of windows.  When you program for Windows a good chunk of the GUI API's is contained in the Internet section of the documentation.  This is a benefit and problem because of the exploitation that is done.   I prefer to have the additional functionality along with the slightly increased risk that goes with using a popular and tremendously functional operating system.  I am not a Microsoft lover.  In fact I've always hated MS, but the reality is I am far more productive using and programming Windows then any other OS.

QuoteYou say you don't ever scan for adware or spyware Bruce?

I didn't say that I never scan.  What I meant to say was that I do not have them installed.  I do not keep installed any kind of adware removal or antivirus software on my computer.  I do not need them, I do not have a problem with them.  I did say that I do an antivirus scan on my computer twice a year to insure that it's clean.  At the time I install what I need and then remove it when I'm done.  When I do scan I do not find anything on my computer.

I have fixed many computers that have spyware/adware/virus problems.  I have Norton's Anti-Virus software and I have on my USB thumb drive, which I carry around with me all the time, several adware/spyware removal tools (adaware, HiJaak This, etc.).  I just personally don't need them.  You receive them by installing programs that have them piggy backed on them, agreeing to their installation during the install of a program, or by promiscuous clicking while surfing the net (and having your browser configured in a way that allows them to run and install themselves).
