Lately my computer had been locking up quite frequently.  I don't really know why.  It does it 2-3 times a day and used to I would go weeks sometimes months without it happening.  I think I remember someone saying that the computer locks up because the harddrive is going out.  What is the best way to back up my harddrive so I don't lose anyhthing?

Also, could something else be my problem?

Thanks,

Sky

if you run several computer power sucking apps at once and run out of ram really fast then the computer can lock up...

You got it alright Alex my pc locks up upto 10 times a day. Mum just wont get the hint that we need a new pc, and I cant be assed to transfer all my stuff to disc lol.

I got that Firefox browser today MotoX lol and I have to say it is much better than bloody Yahoo Browser :D

i just buy a new hard drive and rebuild when my old one gives me hassle or becomes full,
then i just copy onto disc anything i know i will need, and if i ever leave somthing behind i just slap the old drive in when i want somthing and boot up the old one copy to disc,
that way ive always got a full load of PC history on tap as it were.

Yeah, in my opinion, Firefox is the best browser you can get.

46gb of 80gb is full.  The comp is about 8 months old.  It's a gateway 710g.

Sounds like a format could possibly fix your problems also, what OS are you using 98 SE or XP?

Also make sure your video card or CPU is not overheating as that will cause your pc to lock up.

How do I check for over heating?  I'm running windows XP.  Could someone link me to a tut on how to reformat?

I got all my mcm2 stuff onto cd's last night.  SO many GB's of tracks. lol

Thanks Blue.

Man that looks like I could really screw something up if I do this. lol  I defragged my comp last night, so we'll see if that helps.  I don't think I've ever done that. lol

Defragging is just a way for the hd to sort things up, like if you'd clean your rome... it saves a litle space and make things work a tad faster but usuly dosn't help for biger problems. I'm suprised you haven't formated a computer (if I got that right) yet...you really should do that from time to time if you use windows. Formating is like taking everything and throwing it outside the window...lol.

One tip is to make a special partition for windows install only... that way you don't have to reinstall windows and that kind of *#*#* everytime you want to reformate. then you just reformate everything on the disk except the windows part saving you lots of work. :)
