This has probably been asked and answered years ago but I found nothing relating to my question in the archives so here goes.

Anyone know why Dillo1 doesn't place any of the large trees when generating vegetation with the serengetti .est file?  Is there any way to get Dillo1 to place the trees?

hmmm....I'm not sure exactly what your problem is. The serengetti set is my favorite, and I've never had problems. Have you been changing anything in the .est file? Like tree sizes and such?
Maybe check it out in notepad, maybe something got messed up or deleted.

Here's the stock serengetti est

You can go into your trackeditor/ecosystem folder, open the est in notepad and copy paste this and then see if you can get dilo 1 to generate the trees.

Also, if you're using a placement or probability map, don't forget you have to save, then reopen your project to see the tree generated for you map.

It's very easy to manipulate the .est files... not sure if that's the right extension tho... not the files genereted by D1 in ur project dir, but the stock ecosystem files...

Well I haven't done any editing of the .est file and I just compared mine .est to file to the one you posted and they are identical.  What happens to me is that I'll do a generate with serengetti and everything will get placed but the trees.  That is I get everything except veg. items 10-12.  this happens to me no matter how many items I generate and no matter how many times I regenerate the veg.  Another odd thing is that the trees place just fine in DIllo2.

Thanks for the reply and the serengetti is my favorite also.  Love the way the trees over hang the track.

Ok, copied and pasted.  Still not a single tree in sight.  Maybe there is a glitch in armidillo or something maybe a reinstall?  Although I've had this problem ever since I started using D1.

Dillo1 uses some random calculations based on the values in the EST file to place trees. These values control where the trees are placed according to the steepness of the terrain and a couple of other features i'm not sure about. The serengetti trees need the terrain to be quite flat to get placed if you have a hilly terrain then the Dillo1 calcs won't find a spot that the tree 'likes' so it won't get placed.

You can change this by making the StandardDeviationSlope value smaller i think, in the Forest.EST trees use a value around 20, in Serengetti they are 30. Make a copy of the original to work on, and change the name of the eco system at the top of the file and it should get recognized by Dillo.

Hmmm you have no trees at all? What does a custom object look like when you place it? I had a problem once when I placed trees they wheren't there, and custom objects where f*cked up, I think I fixed it downloading latest direct x or reinstalling it.

I'm not getting any of the serengetti trees even on a totally flat disp. map.  I've adjusted the StandardDeviationSlope up and down with no results.  And also my custom objects place and appear just fine.

You might want to try lowering the 'MeanSlope' values for the trees but if they don't come out on flat ground that probably won't make any difference. Only thing i can say is use D2 to place the big trees by hand.

For what it's worth my experience with several of the different  est file trees that won't show up randomly will show like you want if you make a placement map.

hmmm, well thaks for the help guys. 

I'm beginning to think that my Dillo1 is just not operating properly in this area.  It also does a few other odd things when randomly generating trees.

1.  If lets say I click desert veg set first (doesn't matter which I pick first) and then decide I want to change to a different one the new veg will not be randonly generated but the desert set with be generated again.  If I generate many times (10 ish) then the desired set appears (with the exception of serengetti. all the veg types are there).

2.  The MXU veg sets generate nothing.  That is, the percentage bar runs at the bottom and zero vegetation appears.  I do have the latest MXU est files and the updated RES files as well.

Remember to close and re-open your project after adding vegetation or you won't see any.

If you use a "placement map", you can give the serengetti tree a color and place that color on your placement map where ever you want them.

If you haven't use a placement map in a track, try reading the placement map tut and downloading the pre-made .est color palettes for paint shop pro, located on ]url=http://www.mauicool.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=5&min=10&orderby=dateA&show=10#categorystart]this page[/url]. The palettes have a readme file and a jpeg showing what color will produce which piece of vegetation of each .est file.
