I just had a message pop up that said my Windows Virtual Memory is low. It said that more space is being provided or something. It also said access to some programs may be denied. What does all this mean? ???
You'r low on RAM ... restart see if it empys it a bit, if not...upgrade :P
Im definately not low on ram. I just upgraded to 1024mb about a month ago. How do I check to see how much I have before I restart?
its not that virutal memory is space that windows use on your harddrive like when u use programs
if you rigth click My computer icon on the desk top and clik options
then you will find a virutal memory options..
select program controlled..
thats all..
EDIT: Forgott to say this have noting to do whit ram at all..
Oh tought so.. I have it sometimes if windows *#*#*s up and some progs will stay in the memory... oh well :P
Just to let you know, you can hit ctrl+alt+delete, if you're using xp, and then go to performance, and it says how much free ram out of all the ram you have.
And how many memeory each aplication uses.
You can also do this if for some reason you're on windows 2000
The "virtual" memory is the size of your Window's page file. Normally this is set to "let windows" manage. I always set mine to a static size. This will keep the hard disk from thrashing as Windows resizes it all the time!
Normally 1.5 times the amount of ram you have is a good setting if you have 512MB or more.
Every process that you have running thinks it has all the memory that it could possibly have. Potentially 2 gig, 4gig, or 6 gig depending on which windows you have. The actual amount of memory that you have is the combination of your real memory and your page file.
When your "Available" physical memory drops to 4 MB windows has to take something out of real memory and put it iin the page file. A system running with 4 MB available is really slow, almost any memory allocation ends up requiring a lot of disk activity.
Programs that have memory leaks or require a lot of memory (try resizing a picture to about 40000x40000 pixels instead of 4000x4000), will force you to use all of your page file and you will get that warning.
If it is a rare temporary thing, than increasing the page file is good enough. What I go by is the the "Peak" value in the "Commit Charge (K)" section of Task Manager. From a clean boot, run through some of your typical work scenarios and then check that value. You should have more memory than that value. If you do, you won't be swapping to the page file except in extreme circumstances.

So could the fact that I have had 3Dmax and Photoshop open since Sunday without closing them and ever restarting be my problem? :P
Nothing like a reboot to freshen things up. ;)
I have that alot of times when I leave my pc on for a few days like you... reboot!
Yeah, I guess I should. I've been leaving it on at night so I can work on my track as soon as I wake up in the morning before I got to class. ;)

It's a good idea to restart from time to time. I usually restart once a day (unless I'm having problems). So just do a restart each night when you are done with it and it will be ready to go when you wake up. You could even restart again right before you leave for class just to clear things out so it is ready for you afternoon/evening session. ;)
