ok i thought id start a thread for peeps to show there progression on there contest tracks.
ive not touched dillo since last december and man i feel like a noob.
anyway heres what ive come up with so far, a simple layout some nice swells and pleanty of off camber stuff to keep the speed real.
just a start to clear the cobwebs ;D

trust me there a challange, the off camber entry makes you work hard on the right entry line and they fall away over the hil making you brake as you come to the end to hit the table top right, size wise in game there a nice size i dont wana get carried away with size hehehe.

looks good myth. when u hit displace in max, blur it 0.1 it makes it look better,and thats what dillo does, with the dispsmooth off, but with dispsmooth on its a 1.5 blur
24 i never use blur anyware i dont use it in max because i want it to look like that and in dillo i remove every posebal blur there is lol ;)
Both your entries are lookin pretty cool. That is some major rhythm ya got there Myth. :o Hey Ian did you use terragen for that terrain? I decided I would start on a track but using totally different way of making the terrain. I might post a pic if I get it done soon.
Oh and if anyone says 'but I thought u quit..' the fact is mcm2 was goin downhill and it wasnt really worth the effort for me. Now TD is back up properly theres an incentive to go about makin another track. Hopefully this will top any previous ones I have done, although the time limit is gonna cut me back big time.
hmm burn the bes way to do a hilly terrain is just to *#*#* around with a brush in diff levels (white/black) and then blur em all together and then for the path use a black soft brush and then set the layer type to mulitply and the opacity that fits yout style for the track and then hold Ctrl+Click the layer you have the path on and it will select the whole path that you have just done and then just press the layer that you have your "hillyterrain" on and gaussion blur and the path is perfect
yeah i just generated a randem terrain in TG and loaded it into dillo playing with the grid res and displacement strenght till i was happy with the size and shape then just placed a path and now im almost done on the jumps.

ps. i blured the TG terrain by 4.5 pixels in PS before i put the jumps on then i dont have to use the blur in dillo cos that kills everything.
i hate dillo blur , like ian said it ruin everything. And myth i was talking about if ur gonna render texture in max use the blur

very nice, but i think your working on just making the disp and not making sure it rides fine.. in other words, i think ur rushing your project. like with my old project, i had a sweet dispmap and i rushed it and it came out like poop
ok 24 your al wrong now again lol:P im tabin in and out of dillo and when im tired of it i go in to max and make a render and lol im not rushing anything
this is just a base and im a most a FMX dude and we go for the reality facotor and we could basacly pull together a good track in a day and still make it realy good well thats something for you to think about next time you say anything to the MYTH ;)
looks wise its crisp, looks nice, im not a big SX guy i can never seem to get the rythem right makeing it or riding lol
if i was riding that track like most close rythem SX i end up just hitting everything like a whoop section. lol

I always test mine in dillo. I think my contest track is the only one I have used MCM2 to test. All my others were tested 95% in dillo. They turned out ok I think. ;)
Here's mine. Nice tight, rutted SX. Way different from my past tracks. And yes I know the bales are too big. I've got smaller ones to put on it. ;)

Hey Sky, make the dirt more natural looking overtop of the grass. Like as if it was dumped there, and settled naturally. A little more overspill here and there, more random.
yeah i agree the edge of the track looks to "man made" if that makes sence lol.

ok i just spent the morning tweeking my dispmap till it rides good in game.
ive thrown some Tearragen textures on it so i can get a good feel to what i like dislike blah blah you know the score.
theres plenty of off camber sections tables and doubles at angles and the brakes are needed to keep a good line.
off the start is some flowing up and down sweepers leading to some small whoops/braking bumps then a angled launch.

that leads into a table top on a hill side running into an off camber over a hill whoop section.

after the whoops if ya lined up right sets you into another table.

then your lead into a set of down hill doubles and some more braking bumps up to a tight left jump turn type thing

Thats lookin nice Myth.. Just a thought tho, Double displacement maps are usually more hassle than they are worth, as they leave an annoying tile everywhere else which is hard to mask. Also, they tend to just get too long.

Ok, I wasnt gonna post this up but I had a change of heart lol.
Progress is slow at the moment lol, I had to hand-draw all the terrain, and so far this is just a very rough reprasentation of what it will be like. Ignore the textures, They were just quickly rendered to replace the dillo greyness lol.

id say chill out on the off track hieght, otherwise your always riding round as if your trapped in a canyon lol.
but its up to you, id say make the off track more real looking.
also the width and lenght of the straights may be a little big? i mean if its gunna be a realism-ish track your guna need to keep the speeds down with a shed load of tech-ish jumps or you may find yourself doing 80+ mph
maybe just use a smaller grid size thats what id do and see how it feels.

Yea, I am gonna have to find ways of slowing you down, as it is the grid size is a 3.5 which is very small in my opinion.
I might end up importing some terragen generated terrain and setting at a low opacity so those flat areas of ground will have some nice variation.. think that is a good idea? ???
Also, I'm not actualy sure what to do bout the canyony bits, It is meant to be in a canyon setting, maybe I should have made that apparent in the quick textures. What you cannot see there really is that all the paths are at different heights, so if i take the canyon wall of one down a bit, it could completely eliminate the wall for another. :-\
I say if you get some desert/red clay tex on the it would look much better.
id say put the grid res down to 3.0 and that will tighten things up a treat. as for the canyon type effect, if that was what you were going for thats cool, it just didnt look right with the green texture thats all(even though i knew they were just temporary textures) drop the grid res 0.5 and try it then start slapping some rythem sections on it.

Ok, Yea I will drop the grid size and rough up the ontrack a little, I have planned out the jumps now, just gotts set them all up. Will render with some different textures later on tonight and see if that improves it.

Hmm noticing some stuff that I think should need fixing...
The contest is aimed a realism, but I c paths crossing eachother... never saw that in real live unless theres an over-under place... This needs fixing IMHO cause it isn't even close to realism... imaging getting hit by a bike from the side... lol

Yea the pictures kind of deceiving(sp?) lol. The riders on the other side of the jump and really far away. The ruts are only about 2 tires wide. On my old tracks I would make them 1 pixel wide, but I tried 2 pixels wide because it's easier to see them.
Yes well i decided to turn this into Stetz '04 and because steven (rfj_stc007) has been so busy with work he cannont work with me on this project in time for contest... The first Stetz me and him did was first of a few Stetz series tracks we were going to make together... At first i thought about it, but it wasnt really my intention on realeasing it for the contest anyhow, just posting some pics :)

lol well its hard to make time. Work starts at 6:45. Get off at 3 and load up my *#*#* and head to the track with a friend. The track is 45 mins away and I ride every tuesday and thursday. On off days I'm busy washing and working on the bike lol. But then my first year of college starts up pretty soon :o :o
im allready in college and work and still make time for mcm2 shoooottt.... u gotta its to addicting when your like me and u can't go real ridin everyday. i can never give up a motocross game just like i could never give up motocross.

If I decide it will be, I want to go all out with some new custom objects that I don't need to place with Dillo2, simply because I hate it. ;D

Well, I've been working so good with my new sx, I've decided to make it Snap4 - Stress Fracture (thanks to Alex for another nice title ;D). It's fairly rutted all over the track, in some spots you can see the ruts, anyways, this is what I have done so far. About a days worth of work altogether. :-\

ThanKX for the comments guys!I was going for 100% realizsm on this one.It was inspired by a comnination of the 4 dofferent tracks I race in my district. Gravity,that map is lokking SWEET so far!Should be a fun contest,though I would have hoped to see alot more teaser pics from alot of creators.Oh,well.
I think this really is coming along fine...espacially for my first national, cause normally I only make supercross tracks :D THe ruts are to straight I know, there just there temporary...

Well here's another update. Disp is all done just needs alot more tweaking. Also a small preview of a stadium Myth is creating for me. The track goes outside the stadium and has roof over top, or will should I say. ;D

Great looking track there Ian, gotta love that sky cube and in that last pic where you have the terrain worn away around the boulders, nice realism touch.

the sky took me some time to get the hills in the place a wanted them and the size, also the haze effect and cloud cover where i wanted it, well its all uploaded now and i cant wait to ride some of the other tracks im seeing here.
snap 4 is looking soooo cool can see myself getting X-rutted in them whoops though lol great looking SX.

Mines finally done. Got some little bonuses in it since I had so much room. Lauries new Dillo2 made everything super easy to finish. Now you can make nationals using stunt maps.

thirty eight and nemesis have you thought mabey making the sides of ya jumps less steep so there less straight edged looking, so they look more natural? ? just a thought.

hope I can get it done... since my D1 and D2 won't support custom objects...D1 doesnt show them ingame and D2 crashed when I place them..or load a track whit them it gives an error and loads it whitout them :s

Thanks for all the positive thoughts guys, really makes me feel like im doing it right this time. I haven't had much luck with making tracks people like but i reckon you guys might like this one.
Also i feel the same way as thormx, such a great line up of tracks, this contest should be very interesting to say the least.
And to dodgy: I dont bother rounding the edges off till i've completed the layout cause im usually gonna change all the jumps anyway so it's a bit of a waste of time ya know.
i was gonna enter a sx that has been sitting around a long time but i can't seem to get dillo working properly so i gave up on it again

I know it's annoying to nitpick. But dodgy, how could you think my track was done, the 2 ends dont even connect in that render ???
lol you know what, i looked at thirty ates map (which was more sharp edged than yours) and and thats what made me say about smoothing the edges, and then i sore yours and mentioned it aswell.
then when i came back and said i thought it was done i mistook yours for his and......... lol i think you know what i mean.

Its a shame I cant get my disp finished in time. I did all custom natural elevations, tough corners and rutted areas too, was following the realism factor nicely. I will continue making this track tho.

Noel the grid size is so small to get the ruts to be realistic in size.

I think this Snap will be the final. If not, then Snap5 will be. If I do create a Snap5 I was thinkin of doin' the track co-op with some people. A few people on one track, a few different styles etc..be neat I think. :-\
Hey alex, did armadillo exit everytime you'd do a few things while the track was set at the 1.6 gride res?
dillo starts getting weird when you go lower then a 2.0 grid res... i once found a way around it but forgot !!!!!
No problems with it here. Well.... actually, Now everytime I import a map for the 1st time I can't see it in 3d mode. I have to save it and reopen and everything is ok. But no crashing happened while using the grid res.
Bloody hell, if i go lower than 2.0 it just exits every time i go to test the track after re-loading the dispmap. Owell, 2.0 will do.
Also does anyone have a good rut tutorial for textures, im really stumped on how i can make some good ruts. Everyone seems to have it down pat but me.
nem... for ruts i just make a new layer with a 1px brush, color black and draw some ruts.. then when your done change the opacity down till they look natural.. nd then go to your dirt path and use a brush the size of ur path nd use the burn tool and go around your whole track once. hope it helps
I use the burn and dodge tool for ruts. 1 pixel sized brush on a low opacity.
i learnt from kazam how to do ruts this way.
get your rendered texture and add a new layer,
fill it with pure white and set layer to "multiply"
then get the burn tool set at 1 pixel and set the range to "highlights" and presure of 50%
then draw your ruts.
i do all mine straight onto the 960 x 960 so it doesnt smudge on resizing down.

That's a good way to do ruts as well. They turn out nice. :)
yup and i learned it from The_Loz :D i think it works better when ya set pressure to 32%
ive tried pressures from low to high and found no real need to worry about it because you can simply adjust the layer opacity to your likeing. i just found that easyer.

Thats the real bummer, cos I am at my dads till thursday, then on friday im off to my gf for the weekend, that leaves hardly any time for disp and no time for textures. Think metz is doin em, are ya? lol And thats hardly fair with a day or so to go, and it takes me about a week to do objects anyway.. :-\

Wow that is lookin awesome! Little heavy on the trees but thats looking really nice and realistic. Textures are nice too.
Yeah, I wanted parts of the track to have a real wooded look. I used only 20000 trees though. The only trees are the ones around the track. If you go off into the perimeter tiles you'll see that there is a point where there are no longer any more trees.
Ah that is ok then I enjoy riding through areas surrounded by trees, just my system cant handle it sometimes ;)
BTW what other tracks have you made?
thats a very nice looking track Davie i like the dence tree lines although im guessing they will lag a hella, not because of the overall amount of trees but the amount in one area that the engine has to deal with as you pass them,
but i may be tottaly wrong lol. great look though.
