Title: Track Deformation?
Post by: wretchedbass on April 22, 2014, 12:18:51 AM
I was wondering if anyone has figured out how Rainbow had a bump map on top of the displacement giving the bulldozer marks and already ridden look?

Those are special objects that act on the track surface, but haven't been added to DE yet. The exact details of how they work still hasn't been worked out.

I was looking for some inspiration for my new track and played Moto448. I really wanted to do that rutted out look on my track, but didn't know how to do it without huge amount of work.
I just found this thread, are there any updates on these bump maps for displacement yet?
By the way, didn't Veikkeli do exact this thing on his new track Zyphar?

No, Veikkeli just used 2 different bump maps, one that's raised up, and one that's much lower, and then painted the ruts on the RGB Mask.  It's the closest you can get to that cosmetic rutted look at the moment.

The ruts on the stock tracks take a lot more work.  It requires a custom object to be made using a program that lets you edit the vertex colours, but more importantly (for blending) the alpha colour of the vertex needs to be editable.  At the moment the only program I've been able to do that in, is 3DS Max.  Might be possible later on, but right now you'll have to stick with what you know.

Thank you for the fast answer!
I actually didn't think of something like that but that's exactly what I was looking for  :)
