Title: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: Wolfie619 on November 25, 2012, 02:33:28 PM
hey guys why dont we use this to post tracks being made for reflex...ive browsed around and cant realy find a topic like this for reflex.

ok this is my 1st attemt at a track for reflex, its my local mx track in south africa, i worked hard on getting the scale as close as possible, when i test it it feels alot like the real track, i even took a image from google maps for track path and worked out the scaling from that for photosho and digital earthworks, i stil have alot to do and put more jumps in, i had to make the jumps a bit bigger otherwise its to easy to overshoot, i like a track that feels real and can overshoot jumps easy instead of having to come out of turns with a huge speed to be able to make them, i overshoot these jumps very easily in real life so it feels realistic to me the scaling....hope you guys njoy it when im done

Looks good! :)  I too, prefer a track that is realistically scaled.  You can also add different amounts of drag or slip to your track to help give the bike a more realistic speed. There is more information about them here...http://twisteddirt.com/wiki/ZoneFiles

Good to see another Reflex track creator :)

Hey guys finally found my way to here, i have a question about textures does anyone have some good textures to us or can say me where to find them or to make them because my textures now coming out like *#*#* ingame !
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!

i really need to pull my finger out and finish those tutorial vids off.

but here it goes quickly.

use a photo of any dirt, grass,  rocks ect www.cgtextures.com (http://www.cgtextures.com) is a good place to get good free pics.
and make it so the edges tile, watch this vid to learn this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy2cwSV0Iys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy2cwSV0Iys)

adjust the image size to 1024x 1024.  and add a white apha to it
thats your texture done.
save it as .psd file. and put it into digital earthworks.

now for the bump map.
use the texture you just created and in the channels paint the green channel completely white. guassian blur the red channel slightly and blur the blue channel also
look in the wiki at the stock reflex bump maps. to see how much to blur them.
http://www.twisteddirt.com/wiki/DirtTextures (http://www.twisteddirt.com/wiki/DirtTextures)

the amount the blue channel differs from black to white afftecs the height of the bumps, (full white to full black is maximum bump, sort of like a heightmap) so play with the contrast of the blue channel to get your bumps the way you like.
save it as a .psd and put it in digital earthworks.
done

its pretty simple once you get the hang of it.

cheers al167

Uhh thats a point... I was going to write a wiki article about bump maps, describing what each of those channels do... I'll have to get on that!

Jizwizard,
You need to sign in with an account to view the track pages.

Hopefully I'll get this site finished and cleaned up soon. The uploading tracks function works, but it's invite only at the moment until I decide it's ready for public use.  If anyone wants to upload, let me know.  You can upload your unfinished beta tracks if you wish.  Might as well let you use the site for something until I get things sorted. :) Sorry for the delay in development, I'll get back on to it soon...

I just tested your track and I have to admit - it's awesome. The SX track (the dark red one) is a masterpiece. Probably the best one so far  ;D
I hope you will continue the work on the compound.

The compound looks great the only thing that really needs work are the textures its a bit odd how the sand wears away to grass. also add some dark lines like those in the sg compound
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: JamieT on April 05, 2013, 03:24:15 PM
Flarer245,
The reason for the sand wearing away to grass, is because the grass texture is set to the Base (Black) Channel.  If you swap them around, and put your grass into the Red, Green or Blue channel, it should fix that problem.

hey flarer#245, that looks like motobosses js compound from mx simulator. ive already asked him if i could release that for reflex, and he just plainly said no....and he would rather release it himself one day. people dont like it when you relese there work, even if its for another game. but....
mcm2boys has said he will put the alive version in reflex, so hopefully that will happen soon!!!!

On another note i have js7 compund from mxsim on my pc already but i just wont release it.
if your converting mxsim tracks for reflex,  you can use the shading map from mxsim for your crmlum alpha chanel , and also use the shading map in this case as the topdown and main image for the crm lum, you can also use the skybox images and join them all up to make a 4096 x 1024 image. also just another hint, the standard textures in digital earthworks are the alive textures from the js7 compound!

I've just had a look at a video of the MXS version, and I have to agree that it does look very much like Motoboss's track.  I'm sorry Flarer245, but the track has been removed from the site.

Thanks for the heads up Al.  Sorry if anyone is disapointed that the track has been deleted, but plagarism is not cool kids! :)

Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: JamieT on April 12, 2013, 06:39:21 AM
Hmmm you're right!...  :-\ I think this has to do with the franchise changing hands.  The auction for the MX ATV brand should be happening within the next few days.  Maybe it has already happened, but hasn't been announced yet?...  After that, the company who picks it up should re-initiate the servers on steam, as those are one of the responsibilities for whoever wants to be the new owner.  Hopefully mulitplayer will be back sooner rather than later, but I'm confident that it WILL be back! :)
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!

Has multiplayer stopped working then?
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: JamieT on April 12, 2013, 09:49:09 AM
It seems so...  When you click multiplayer from the main menu, it says that "The MX vs ATV server is unavailable at this time - Please try again later."  I'm sure things will be resolved by the new owners.  Hopefully this is an indication that THQ no longer holds responsibilty for the servers, and that the property has already been sold.  There is probably some kind of admin process with the transfer of ownership which will cause such a delay.
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: mcm2boys on April 12, 2013, 11:11:46 AM
I don't run the game very often at the moment but i just gave it a spin and got the message. Hmm, i didn't expect that, i thought Steam would trade the server usage for the ad revenue and a slice of the game sale. Hope there are some new owners that want to keep the franchise alive.. better take a look at the Steam API..
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: JamieT on April 12, 2013, 11:51:48 AM
Yeah I thought that too... That Steam would take a cut of the profits in order to pay the costs. But I supose that as sales drop, there will still be people playing online, so in the long run, that business model wouldn't quite work.  Apparently the PS3 servers are down, and the DLC store for Alive on Xbox is down, but multiplayer is still up for Alive on xbox.

In those documents I posted, No. 2 - Bidding procedures, under the heading Participant requirements, section (d) says: "Written evidence that the Bidder has the necessary financial ability to close the contemplated transaction and provide adequate assurance of future performance of all obligations to be assumed in such contemplated transaction, reasonably acceptable to the Debtors."

If THQ had a contractual obligation with Steam, Sony, or XBox Live, to continue the multiplayer servers for X amount of time, then the new owners will have to continue that.  Once those contracts are up, then it's definitely possible that the servers will be shut down.

I think that one day eventually we probably will need to set up our own server, and I think Allan was looking into this a while back.  But as for the moment, I think this is just temporary.

Also, the deadline for the final bids is April 15th. So I think next week we'll find out who's taken the reigns.  We just have to hope that it's a company who is behind the franchise 100%.

Yeah I think I saw the article you're refering to. I think it's this one?...

http://www.polygon.com/2013/2/27/4035056/mx-vs-atv-franchise-developers-express-interest-in-the-series-future

It's certainly possible that those guys that got laid off by THQ would reform, and purchase the IP, but I'm putting my money on 2XL games being the strongest candidate for the purchase.  Reason being, a lot of the guys there used to work at Rainbow Studios on the early MX games.  It's possible that the developers of MUD, Milestone may take an interest, but as they've already invested so much into building their own mx game engine, I don't see it being likely.  They could certainly use the physics engine though, and put it to good use. :)  I've heard people kick Codemasters name into the hat also, but they've recently stopped development on everything except the F1 games and the upcoming GRID 2, so they don't look to be in a good way financially right now. Besides those guys, I don't think there's anyone else that's shown an interest in off-road racing games is there...?  :-\

Been rl filming allot since my first track release, I had some down time so I started working on another track....well, now Im kinda bummed with the "recent" news (to me at least). Did some catching up and so far this is what I got. Reflex server is offline, Nordic purchased the ip and promises to look into it. And with all the  research Ive done there are no "Custom Servers" out there or even been worked on. So I guess the question is...do we (track builders) continue or move on....And will the awesome TD Team continue to support Reflex? This sux because I seriously love the tools available now. And the community has been nothing but helpful.

Welcome back to the scene Poidog! :)

Yeah it's pretty unfortunate that the servers have been down for well over a month now.  The sale was finalised by the courts last week, so hopefully Nordic are making some gains to get things back up and running again.  They bought a heck of a lot of IPs from THQ, so they've probably got a lot on their plate right now, maybe more than they can handle...

I think it's still too early to give up on Reflex.  Personally, the servers going down hasn't really affected me too much.  I'll still be playing this game even if the servers never come back online.  I just love to work on my own tracks and that's where I get the most enjoyment out of this game.  It would be a shame if the development on the editor were to stop, but it's understandable if the popularity of Reflex were to drop off.

I think, just ride it out.  The servers will be back at some point! :)

For me the editor will continue development, it's something i like to do to unwind and is not related to the servers. I'm hoping the servers will come back up - Nordic are making those kinds of noises but who knows. We're looking into possible alternate ways to get online working but not much hope on that happening right now, but again who knows..

Jamie, I know you are a big boy - so I am going to give you my honest opinion.

At first I thought W T F?
This is a flat copy & paste SX made from "template pieces" like the MCM1 SX editor!!!!

Where is the sweet looking rutted corner - like the screenshot?
Where is the organic, flowing track on the rolling hillside - like the screenshot?

Well, eventually I rode off to the side & found FX ramps & the NAT - but I was still like - meh.

There is a lot of off-camber stuff, but no big air to speak of & no really memorable "oh S H I T" moments or any  rhythm sections that require you to "set-up" your run & the track didn't really "flow" for me.

While there is a lot of off camber & some very cool rutted corners - they are hard to string together into "sections" in order to judge your entry & exit speed.  This is probably because there are no landmark objects to remind you where you are on the track & it just wasn't fun for me - yet...

I know it is easy to be a critic when I haven't made anything myself, but I hope you appreciate an honest opinion and I hope it helps you think of building tracks in terms of memorable "sections" or highlight areas that have to be put together by landmark objects in order to find your flow...

Anyhoo - thx for the test track!

PS - you know what they say about opinions...
Opinions are like assholes - everybody has one - butt they all stink!
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: JamieT on June 24, 2013, 07:59:40 AM
Hey King,

Thanks for taking the time to test the track and to give an honest opinion!  I appreciate that more than anything, because generally when people don't like something, they feel like they should keep quiet for fear of offending.

You're right about the SX track - it's a cut & paste job with pieces I made in 3ds max.  Generally speaking, the AMA SX tracks are pretty cookie cutter, and for example, you can take a triple from any given track, and replace it with a triple from another track, and it won't make a lot of difference, in my opinion, which is why I've gone that route when making sx tracks.  In a way, I kind of like that cookie cutter element of supercross.  :-\

Can I ask, what is an "Oh S-H-I-T" moment? :P  I'm not sure what you mean.

I think what throws a lot of people off with my tracks, is the scale I use.  Which is why it doesn't seem like there is any big-air moments.  The step up jump towards the end of the lap is a 40ft vertical step, and 110ft + horizontal jump.  LaRocco's leap at Redbud is around 110ft too.  I know it doesn't feel like big air when compared to the stock tracks for example, but when you compare it to real life scale, it's a pretty decent gap.

I'm not sure what to say about the flow of the track, and I'm just guessing, but I think you might be trying the blast your way around the track, trying to go flat out all the time, which means you end up making mistakes in the ruts..?  You may find that once you slow down and concentrate on hitting smooth precise lines, you find it more enjoyable.  Sorry if that sounds patronising!  :-\  I'm assuming that of course, so let me know if this is the case.

Again I'm guessing, but I think you're a guy that prefers tracks that are more "MCM2 style", with some sx style rythm sections, and difficult gaps that require you to hit them at full speed?  This track doesn't really have that feel to it, so I think I can understand why you don't like it, if that's the case.

In terms of landmarks, and memorable sections, I'll keep your comments in mind.  It's easy for me to know what's coming up as I've done so many laps on this now, that it's all routine, so I might need to try and take a look at it from a first time player's point of view.

My philosophy with making tracks, and adding difficulty to a track, is to steer away from that focus of "maximising speed and traction" to find lap time, and go tend towards "smooth lines and bike control" to find lap time.  I don't want this to sound like, "Hey you don't understand how you're suposed to ride this track",  I thought I'd explain my philsophy of how I play this game, and what I enjoy.

I really do appreciate your critque though.  Negative comments, even though I may or may not agree with them, they're always the most valuable comments!  Let me know if any of the above comments are true about your playing style, that way I can get a better understanding about where you're coming from.

Thanks!

Edit :  Here's a video of the lap, in case you wanted to point out any particular sections...

After watching your video I might have been running it backwards!!!!  I probably crashed at some point and got turned around, but never saw that start gate area until I saw your video!  I was just not having much fun and only ran maybe 5-6 laps...  :-X

I like cookie cutter SX tiles too, but "back in the day" there was usually something "extra" or some special hand painted feature or obstacle that was added to some really fun SX tracks in the old MCM2 & MX v ATV days... but that may be an old mans nostalgia too!

Nothing really crazy though... like a series of sand (colored) whoops that were low & slow vs. another whoops section on the same track that were sharp edge hardpack & really hard to perfect at full tilt boogie, plus some odd-ball wall jumps that lead to tricky rhythm sections, or a series of on-off saddlebacks or section of berm blasting like 45-45-60-90-180 berm sections vs. just 90's & 180's everywhere & then some memorable gap jumps over some landmark object with a short jump right after it that forces you to brake hard & jump short to set up for the next section, etc.   Nat builders really got creative too!  I loved stair step style jumps - up or down - timing was everything & sometimes you could clear crazy stuff with the right timing in the previous sections...

RE: the "Oh S H I T" moments = that would be sort of like LaRoccos Leap when you realize you blew the previous section & there is no way you will make it - OR - you blitzed the previous section & you are gonna' overjump & die!  Other examples are (like you said) unrealistic, fantasy tracks from MCM2 with crazy fast, huge gaps.

I recognize you are not making a fantasy style or balls to the wall fast track, so I'm not judging "fun" based on that or my prefrences because I don't really prefer one over the other... variety is the spice of life!

Some realistic tracks are fun, some aren't - same with the old fantasy tracks...

I loved the bumpy AMA Replicas from Mike (someone - Mike Mach?) - especially Redbud & Glen Helen!

I also loved "that one guy" from TD (sorry, I forget the name) who added a TON of objects and made some great tracks with really tight trails through the trees & rocks on the side of a mountain & after crossing some bridge and jumping a semi-trailer flat bed ramp over a building you had to clear a ski-jump style gap and stuff like that - he really made some amazing, fun, creative tracks...

I'm glad you explained the scale settings and glad you are building tracks the way you are.  I prefer technical tracks which you describe as "smooth lines and bike control to find lap time".

Maybe if I run the right direction it will be more fun!  :o

PS - I think I ran some sections in both directions after I had crashed off into oblivion & didn't know my way back to where I was - it's hard to remember without any unique objects... plus I was going balls out the whole time vs. how you rode it because you knew what was around the next corner / over the next hill...

I forgot to mention too, that the SX you start on, is the Indianapolis 2008 Supercross, and the one hidden at the top of the big hill, is 2009 Atlanta.  That's why there isn't really anything all that unique in terms of obstacles, but I understand what you mean about that, those layouts are pretty bland.  The supercross tracks are more of a 'technical experiment' I guess you could say, rather than me being creative with layouts.

Hehe so you were running backwards huh.... :P  Yeah that can certainly give the track a weird flow.

Yeah if you take it easy at first, then gradually get faster, it'll probably be better, as certain ruts require a very precise line to hit them smoothly.  There aren't many that'll let you lock into and rail whilst you're going full bore.

A couple of other people have requested a "do or die" jump on the track.  I think the closest there is to that sort of thing, is at 1:15 on the video. There's a left hander with an easy double into some big rollers.  Well if you hit the outside line, you can triple into those rollers.  It's not spectacular... but it's the best there is.. :) hehe.  I'll probably think more about this type of "do or die" jump on the next track I make, as I just want to get this one to a finished state now, so I can move on to something new.  The only thing I'll be doing to this to increase difficulty, is more bumps and more ruts.

Yeah Mike Mach... Legend!! :)  The other guy you're thinking of was Mike McCue (Harmonic Cycle Design) http://www.harmoniccycle.com/hc/3d-g-mcm2-downloads.htm
His tracks blew my mind!

Let me know if your opinion changes after you've done a few more laps in the right direction.. hehe :)  An easy mistake to make I guess, cuz like you say, if you go off the track, there are no objects or landmarks to give you reference points to the direction you were travelling.  Also the textures need doing properly, which hopefully will help...

That scale conversation segment reminds of many real trail rides I've been on (Colorado, Utah, West Virginia, Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana & Illinois of all places) where our photos or videos just to not show the degree of incline or decline of the real life "death dealer" obstacles we rode...

By the way, if anyone is near West Virginia, check out my buddies Moto-Hotel along the Buffalo Mountain Trail System = AKA: Hatfield-McCoy Trails.  The owners name is Bill.  We've ridden all over the US. Tell him Troy sent you!

Hello this is my first time really building a track. I am trying to make a replica of "2013 Anaheim 2 SX." Here is a picture of my height map of what I have so far. Still having some problems with a few jumps, but I'm sure I'll get it the more I practice. Thanks to A167's for making those tutorials  :) they helped me a lot. Hi Lance,

You would need to upload the image to the internet in order for us to see it.  You can use something like http://imageshack.us/ (http://imageshack.us/) to host the image.  Then you would insert the address of the image in between the [ IMG ] tags like you did before.  The address of the image is given to you once you've uploaded your picture.  Or you could right click on the image in your browser, go to 'properties' and get the URL address from there.

Hope that helps :)  Look forward to seeing your track.

nice track!, a few pointers,
I can see a low on either side of the jumps, zoom in on the particular jump and use image/adjustments/levels in photoshop and drag the little black triangle at the bottom left along the slider to raise the minimum black level of the jump until the colour matches.
also when you transform the jumps, the look crooked. you need to rotate them so there horizontal or vertical, and then stretch/shrink it.

good luck, its good to see another reflex track builder!

I noticed that Mototank I think his name is, is already making Anaheim 2. Should I just start making a new one? I don't mind, I just don't wanna take away his hard work if he is making it still. Which 2013 Sx replicas are not being worked on? Thanks.

The last I spoke to him, he was pretty tied up with other things, so he doesn't have much time to create tracks at the moment.  So to be honest, I doubt he will finish his version.  At the end of the day it doesn't really matter if you both made the same track.  It might be the same layout, but your style of track-creating will be different to his, so they would both be unique.  There's no point throwing away the work you've done up to this point.  There's also no such thing as 'calling dibs' on a track in my opinion. :)  Keep going with what you have now bud.  I look forward to seeing something ride-able. It's hard to judge a track just by looking at the displacement map.

as your 'revising' your  files it's a good practice to save to new files and keeping the previous files for backup

I always used the same names and increment the name ie; my_track_disp_01 ... my_track_disp_02....etc

Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a few days... trying to soak in as much info as I can. Finally decided to join!
Loving the custom tracks btw! I actually heard about you guys from watching YELLOWS2KVTEC track reviews and glad to hear that there's a community dedicated to Reflex modding. That's news to me, so I'm just hyped and will be making tracks too!

Anybody else working in 3ds max btw? Lot's of possibilities there right?
Custom objects in DE sometime in the future maybe?

Anyway here's a little work in progress (2013 AMA Supercross Phoenix)

Hey man! Great pic!  I think I'm the only other guy that uses 3DS Max to build tracks!  Good on ya!  Welcome to the club! :)

Yep custom objects are a high possibilty for the future.  The next thing you can expect to see for Reflex will be splines (the track path to race with lap times).  After that, custom objects may follow sometime afterwards.

Thanks guys!

@al167 Indeed, I've been browsing the wiki pages and looking at your video tutorials. Found those very helpful, not to mention the track replicas. Love the flowing lines and attention to detail!

@135Lance 3ds Max is pretty expensive, but you can get a free student version for a limited time.

I have yet to ride all the custom tracks, looking forward to being a part of this community!

 :o Holy smokes!

How wide is that track?  (1 pixel = approx 1 foot in reflex.  Bales are 2 foot wide).  Would be interesting to know how wide you've made it. :)  It will make for some intense racing online that's for sure!  I'd be pretty nervous having someone close behind me whilst I go into a 180 turn.  ;)

Track looks great! I'm digging those ruts. But 20px wide? I tried 25px on my track and got a lot of complaints... then settled for 27-29px. As JamieT said, the bales are 2ft which makes the track narrower than intended. But idk maybe it will work for arena cross. Looking forward to riding this one anyway!

Valley ride is looking good there.. Some of the terrain textures look like light rocks, how did you get that to work..? I'm liking the mud/grass textures too it makes you realise what a big step up the Reflex engine is over MCM2 (or was that an Unleashed track first?)..
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: DirtTwister on July 01, 2014, 07:13:30 PM
It's an MCM 2 track.  It's the first track that I tried to use friction maps on in MCM 2.  It seemed appropriate for Reflex, so that is why I used this track in all the early experimentations. I've changed the displacement map quite a bit from the MCM 2 version.  You can do a lot more at 2048x2048 then 257x257.

I'm hoping that KawaDuck might resurrect Pleasant Farm MX and bring that to Reflex.

The textures are using the Kingston dirt textures and Bedford bump maps.  I blend/mix them up using the RGB Mask.  The softness is set fairly high also in different parts of the tracks.   Up on top of the two ridges I use a more rocky texture with gray painted on the chromlum to try to make it look like snow covered rocks.  The track is fairly slippery all the way around.  Mistake possibilities are high and you are rewarded for keeping up your momentum.  I think you should be able to do a crash free race, but it will be tough not to have to use the reflex controls to recover from mistakes.

I'm working on a few tweaks to give some options and then I'll start tidying up the spline and textures.  I don't plan to put many objects on it.

The AI don't seem to like it much.  I need to play around with that.  I wish we knew who the AI guru was with Rainbow.
Title: Re: Post pics of tracks in the works for reflex!!
Post by: JamieT on July 01, 2014, 09:06:24 PM
Looks good Bruce!  :)  You can tell it has that MCM2 style to it.

I think Mike did a lot of AI tweaking at Rainbow.  They could do all their editing on the fly though, whilst the AI was riding on the track.

little track i started working on. trying to make the track feel naturally built into the hilly enviorment. im not sure if i should try to give the track some ruts and breaking/acceleration bumps or leave it silky smooth and make it erode fairly quick. and not sure if to leave it sandy like it is and adjust drag/slip or make it a tacky clay like track.

Worked on that/these track(s) the last week. (Started in Ps then moved to Leveller)
Started off with a simple layout then thought it'd be cool to have that "2 tracks on 1 map" style like on stock tracks (Sugar ridge and sandwick, moto448 and razorback, etc.) Started combining them and it may look a bit confusing but you will see the result when i post a beta or the final track. ;)

2 pictures:

The main one is the one without the big jump in the middle and the second one is basically running the opposite way (with the same start tho)
