Ok, I know a double-thread must be unheard of and I'm sorry I did it, but I think this deserves to have it's own topic. I just wanted to express something i feel about the mcm2 community.
I have been playing this game for a while now, and ever since I heard you can make tracks and skins and all sorts of stuff, I have wanted to make something for the community to enjoy. Everything I seem to try, whether it be a skin or a track, it seems to fail. I had worked on a national before in the past, but that never worked out. I've always wanted to contribute, but I never discovered a way how because I don't have the skills necessary to create something. All I can really do is tell someone where you can download something for the game or something else.
I just wanted to tell you guys how I felt... sorry if it sounds like a sympathy story.
Thanks for reading,
Aaron
Well, not everyone can make a track. It took me almost 2 years before I made my first ass-kicking Nat and uploaded it.Dont sweat it,at least your willing to help out in some way, right? Your offering your help and not being a wise ass about it like some people get. ::)
I think you should try build another track, throw that first one out and start again, maybe start with an SX since you don't have the extra work of elevation changes. Keep it simple maybe try copying a few sections from other tracks that you like (they won't come out the same because everyone has their own style). Then don't be too hard on yourself if it isn't how you expect it to be, instead try and see the good bits that you didn't expect and work from there.
This isn't easy stuff to do, there's lots of different skills needed and each one takes a lot of practice to get how you want it to be, and none of us are born with these skills we all have had to learn them and we all start in a different place on the learning curve. I threw out maybe 5 or 6 first tracks before i got one finished and that was a steamer, so take just your time and ask here for any of the help you need everybody has been where you are now at some time.
If you want it as badly as it sounds there's no reason why you can't do it.
Laurie
If you'd like to look at any of my disp maps, just ask.
Alright, thanks a lot. I need to download all of the programs again, I deleted them :P. But I will try to give it another go, an kxmotox45, I'll let you know if I need to use your disp map.
Thanks, again
hi bunny...
Trust me pal i have been playing this game so long,,it will say it on my gravestone...
and to this date i have made one track that i never ever let anyone else see, lol.. as it was awful i have driven team mates to insanity and beyond with questions on track making... but basically i just cannot do it maybe im too much of a perfectionist in real life ,so my attempts never meet my own expectations..
But that is just me.
I think u should try again like the above posts say..
and never knock yourself for giving ppl links to tracks or telling them where to find stuff that may be useful to them.. as information is the best knowlege of all.. ..

well ive been making tracks for like nearly 5 years now and the first 3 or 4 i just made road and deleated.
after i became more happy with them then i kept them then after a few more i released one.
the first track i released was total crap compared to what ive learnt to do now.
its just a case of trail and error read and learn and theres never any ristrictions on creativity.
just try and walk before running and dont expect to make a masterpeice on your first few attempts.
have fun and just ask for help, thats why we are here. :D
Ian.
You should give track making another go, Any questions you need to ask, this is the place to ask them. With my first 10 or so tracks, I didn't even know about TD so I had to learn the hard way, mainly all by myself and just using tutorials. A lot of trial and error involved.
It took me about 9 months before I actually busted out a track I was really proud of but nowadays you see people making really nice tracks after not long. A couple people who have released tracks who only started a month ago or so have already been getting great reviews, they have the people here who they can talk to and we are happy to help. Having other people's opinions is vital to making tracks that are worth downloading in my opinion. Since My fist track that was beta tested I have only released 1 track that wasnt tested and that was in sky's contest.
Anyway I am rambling on now lol, what I am trying to say is keep at it we are here to help if you need anything.
From deep within I must say thank you to erveryone of you. I have regained my inspiration and you're right, I need to take it one step at a time.
I think I'do what Laurie said and create an sx, but maybe an outdoor sx?
Thank you again.
Aaron
Yea by creating an outdoor sx it gives you the chance to play with stuff such as the sky and the vegetation, Its a good way to start :)
Well after going at it for an hour or so, here is what I have. Please let me know if it looks close to anything good.
A berm and some whoops

Its a good start. Normally I'd say take off the smooth filter (on the screen where you load your disp map), but in this case, it may help cover up some bad details, and make it flow better. Most of all, play with different techniques (ie: gradient vs. brushes), and learn what feels best for you.
yeah, I wanted the middle of that second pic to look choppy, but I should tweak the berms a little, seeing as how I didn't know how to make them.
But thanks for the comment.
If you ever need any inspiration to keep going. Go to central and take a look at some of the first tracks top creators like mikemach etc. have made.
Yeah, check out my first MCM2 track! :-[ lol! Talk about your steamer! :D

Jeff
I won't show you a picture of my first track. :)
I would like to comment on the smooth filter. Since it has been available (the first few tracks I released it wasn't), I have used it on all normal tga dispmaps. I do not use it on POVRay TGA files.
I find it easier to make dispmaps with the smooth filter on because you have to exagerate the detail that you want to have. I also use gaussian blur extensively on the dispmaps that I create.

I've been working really hard on this, plus trying to find time to work on it while balancing school.
Thanks
IMHO
You should show it off once you get some textures on it, Dillo just doesn't do things justice. But other then that is looking good. The jumps do look rather big though, maybe droping down the disp strength and tightin up the grid. But hey its your track do what you like. Its just my opinion ;)
What SDesign is trying to say is: develop your own style, we can only tell you how to do so much, the rest is up to your creativity.
Ok, I was just seeing if anyone actually liked the way it was going. The flow of the track is ok, and I might tone down that 4-pack jump.
I'll just see about after I finish the disp map.
So where should I take a screenshot from now to show everyone how it's going since dillo doesn't make it look too good?
Ya know the only way to get the skills is to keep trying to find them! My first track sucked too but almost 25 of them later and I think I got better........?
My first one.........
